Another good day at the PLE (Personal Learning Environment) – this time in the Barossa Valley (another fine South Australian wine growing area). Today I listened to a range of podcasts, but the stand-out was the science hour section of the dailysonic podcast.

Science Hour: Spinny Weight Loss by Isaac Dolom
In this week’s Science Hour, Isaac explains how you can loose weight instantly and effortlessly by walking towards the equator.

11aSome quick research reveals:
An object traveling in a circle behaves as if it is experiencing an outward force. This force, known as the centrifugal force, depends on the mass of the object, the speed of rotation, and the distance from the center. The more massive the object, the greater the force; the greater the speed of the object, the greater the force; and the greater the distance from the center, the greater the force.

Fc = mv2/r, where Fc = centrifugal force, m = mass, v = speed, and r = radius.

Hmmm – gotta get me some mathemagical help to do these calculations:

- how many KG would a 100KG person ‘lose’ by moving from pole to equator?

- how many KG does the space shuttle ‘lose’ by launching in Florida vs the far north of USA?

- how short would a day be for a 100KG person at the equator to be ‘in orbit’ or weightless?
