Back in THIS POST I mentioned the significance of the talk given by Prof Lawrence Lessig to the penguin magicians at LinuxWorld 2006. While re-listening, researching and thinking some important things have come to light that I want to share with you now – even before I finish producing something that helps me come to terms with read/write culture.
First, Stephen Downes pointed out THIS PROPAGANDA which on first viewing made me wanna puke! But after watching it a few times with my kids I decided it is important for at least two reasons, one – it shows why the creative commons work is so important, two – the initial reaction by my kids was self censorship – ‘maybe putting our band stuff on the internet is just too risky’. Now I feel that as a parent I have to do something substantial so my kids can continue to grow in creativity without too much erosion of their perceived value of the rule of law.
So, while we wait for the remixes and conversations to develop, here is a little background on the Lessig talk:
Several versions of the audio have landed on my mp3 player (Im not sure where many of them came from) and video versions are starting to appear on youtube and google video.
Lessig gave a very similar talk at least once already this year.
This year’s talk builds on work around lessigs ‘FreeCulture’ book from 2004 – around which there is an entire body of work from transcriptions to remixes and a dedicated site.
Over the past three years, Lessig has given more than 100 talks like the one captured here. On July 24, 2002, at the O.Reilly Open Source Conference he announced this would be one of his last. View It!
I’ve also been watching the blogs with interest for commentary on lessigs talk – and its pretty quiet out there – except for Jude who seems to be looking at this same ‘plate of biscuits’ from a different angle. Maybe we should work together on a whitepaper / presentation???
You can also watch my note-taking, drawings and thinking out loud in my flickr pix. And stay subscribed for updates to this post as more stuff comes in, and for new posts that try to convey the important ideas wot are rattling round my tiny brain.

[...] The supply/demand Triangle photo below is one of the latest products of the MashUp that is occurring in my brain since listening to Prof Lawrence Lessig’s address to LinuxWorld 2006. My original plan was to write a concise blog post (or maybe even white paper) summarizing neatly my reflections on this talk. [...]
