Thanks to Jon Mason, I got to sit in on a very interesting discussion by CORDRA guru Dan Rehak from Wordforce ADL out of Memphis (a FedEx kinda town I learnt today). As I sat there listening to a ‘Top Down’ standards based approach to federating collections of learning resources I couldn’t help wondering what the ‘Bottom Up’ disinteremediated Web2.0 response might look like.
As my brain flip-flopped between the ‘Top Down’ and ‘Bottom Up’ views of the same issues, the word ‘LIGHTWEIGHT’ as in ‘Lightweight Directory Access Protocol – Ldap’ sprang to mind. Wouldn’t it be smart to look for meaningful chunks that could be broken out and thrown to the crowds. In my ham-fisted attempts to remix and mashup text, images, audio and video I find myself wrestling with many of the same issues:
- Identity Management (persistent identifiers for people, self identification etc)
- Content Management (presistent identifiers for digital content, repositories, metadata)
- Attribution Management (not DRM but acknowledgement of authors / contributors)
Anyway, great to get the brain moving by looking at the ‘plate of biscuits’ from another perspective – thanks team.
