A big thanks to Kapn Kirk, Blakey and Antz for helping turn my crazy idea for the ‘Creative Commons Swag’ contest into a reality. The T-Shirt I ordered just in time for a rushed photo shoot and some photoshop munging. Here are my two favourites:

For those interested in the creative process, keep reading, otherwise take a quick peek at THIS SHORT VIDEO that inspired the whole thing.

Being the father of two creative teenage kids (and a bit of a digital hack / remixer myself) I was both moved and challenged by Prof Lawrence Lessig’s talk about Read/Write Culture as delivered to LinuxWorld 2006. Having listened to the Podcast several times and armed with a few hand drawn diagrams, I decided to some digital remixing of my own in an attempt to experience and work through some of the issues raised in the talk. The SHORT VIDEO referenced above is the result - featuring audio from Prof Lessig, Stephen Downes and various bits and pieces from my kids and their school friends.

When I heard about the ‘Creative Commons Swag’ contest I visualised a photo of myself presenting that video from the podium of the Microsoft Innovation Centre I helped establish a few years ago. Trouble is, the rules dictated that I be wearing some ’swag’ (e.g. T-Shirt) that I didn’t have. So, I jumped online and ordered some. While waiting for delivery to Aus, I made some images using stuff from the video, a photo of me and an image of a T-Shirt from the online store. Then, a wonderful thing happened - Beth Kanter (cambodia4kidsorg) ‘mashed me up’ - and I returned fire!

Beth, then one a weekly prize for this cute shot:

My black CC T-Shirt finally arrived, so a quick trip to the Innovation Centre so Kirk and Chris can take some pix of me onstage with various backgrounds on the big screen:

Then into PhotoShop and call for some help from my mate Tony (The Albino):

Talk about standing on the shoulders of giants! - What a blast (and excellent learning exercise).

Thanks Beth! - getting recognition is winning in my books. Planning not to work from my main computers till Feb, will see what I can do over the weekend for birthday remix.

[...] Beth has based her 50th birthday ‘competition’ on ideas from the Creative Commons ‘Swag’ contest we both entered last year. This competition offered a rather trivial prize but created a strong sense of connection and recognition (at least between Beth and I). The comments that we left on each other’s flickr photos constituted a form of ‘peer recognition’ - something that can be easily scaled. The e/mail I recieved from Prof Lessig was recognition from the ’subject matter expert’ - something that is harder to scale but not impossible. [...]
