I am fishing for ideas on ways to extend the conversation about (and hopefully with) Jimmy Wales upcoming visit to Australia for Education.au in April. My particular interest is in how educators could respond in creative ways to the democratisation of knowledge by pushing the boundaries of what’s possible through technology.
To that end, I am appealing to anyone who reads this to chime in with suggestions on what could be done to involve more people in this important discussion. If you can’t or don’t want to attend any of the face to face events in Australia, (and care about the subject matter) what could be done to involve you in the conversation?
- would you listen to podcasts?
- would you tune into a live audio stream of the panel discussion?
- would you engage in a text chat during a panel discussion? - how?
- will you take up the invitation to tag - eduausem2007
- can you do better than THIS attempt to bring all tagged information together?
- got any other ideas?
- what about tools to do some of these / other things?
- any at all??
I threw a similar challenge to De from Education.au a few weeks back and look what she has come up with already - a podcast from our national broadcaster that uses mainstream talkback radio to engage Jimmy with a diverse range of people- from a nine year old kid to an ex Governor General!!
Disclaimer: I have in the past been a paid advisor to education.au in matters relating to their Australian events.

“the democratisation of knowledge?” geez, don’t know about that. But if you’re after ideas to get some exposure on mass media.
Here’s a place to start. ring al http://www.schooltorque.com/index3.html
You might ring ticky at abc. she did the Second Life thing at 4 corners, so as an easy interview, she might find it interesting. You mentioned “Tony Walker the Manager of ABC Digital Radio”. He sounds like a hit
You might try asking the edna community. That’s where i hang out. http://www.groups.edna.edu.au/mod/forum/view.php?id=30989
and talk about pushing the media boundaries

One approach which might prick a few imaginations, and help the journos or academics make a story. Comparing between the beginnings of the Oxford Eng Dictionary & Wikipedia. W.C. Minor, one of the major contributors to the early editions of OED never accepted invitations to Oxford to receive the thanks and congrats. Reason? He was in a mental asylum.

Part of me thinks that in this connected age, I can view and read Jimmy as much as I want so what is the value in actually sitting in the Hilton listening to him, when the important thing is to engage in conversations around the issues that he represents. Another part of me thinks it would be good to go, because the buzz of being there still has an intangible quality that gets the less connected educators talking and thinking. I’ll certainly be accessing any distributed trickles of discussion that come from this event - I’m not really an aggregator of information but if I remember to tag, you might catch some of my ideas on the democratisation of knowledge via your pipes.

‘distributed trickles of discussion’ - I like that idea!
So Graham, what if a TALO swapmeet style ‘unconference’ ran at (or near) the Hilton at the same time - for free?
I would also love your perspective on:

Maybe you could craft up a post and tag it into my pipe!!

A TALO swapmeet, broadcasting out everything by skypecast, recording also for later podcast, and an IM conference backchannel on skype.

You could counter-perspective Beth’s post with this one from Brent Simpson. I’ll go down the post suggestion route after letting the idea brew for a while, especially after spending four hours in a theatre (Al stuck it out as well!) watching traditional style PD with an OS expert at the front for the most part. I’ll even use your tag - something I’ve got to get better at. Not meaning to be facetious, but how would simonfj go hanging a tag on edna forum posts? Can that conversation be fed into a Yahoo pipe? Methinks there’s more conversational opportunity out here on the open web but horses for courses.

Hi Mike,
Great to catch up with you yesterday and hear what your up to - thanks also for the invite to join the feed. I would like to make a greater contribution, but will have to hang out in this area a bit longer before any great contribution is likely. Unfortuneately I have little idea what the acronyms mean and therefore what everyone is talking about just yet!
