According to local news:
The first attempt saw 1014 kites in the air, a new unofficial world record. However, the second attempt saw the number rise to 1127.
Documentation of the event including photos and videos will now be sent to the Guinness Book of Records to have the record verified.

Thanks to Paul and Michelle for clue ing me into the world record beating kite flying event at my local beach – glenelg.
I grabbed my kite between the first and second (successful) attempts.
