I just love the fact that the podcast Dave and I do breaks all the rules and continues to reward us for doing so. The honour of hanging out with one of the brightest people on the planet is reward enough in itself, but sometimes little jewels pop out of the long tail. Yesterday I was extremely flattered to notice (via facebook) that Biff Naked had taken the liberty of publishing a small snippet of one of our episodes on his blog.
Why is this important:
This is a foretaste of the future of media and of language
danah boyd says it better than I can, so I have taken the liberty of messing with her fireside chat with Mark Pesce - PLEASE take a LISTEN.
allowing consumption to become production taking stuff and muck with it and spit it back out…
what would happen if we gave students free range to remix and muck with our politicians YouTube videos (and indeed everything they see on any screen) ?
we need to work hard to digitize and legalise access to the soundtracks and movies that shaped our lives so that we can muck with them and speak them into the future of culture
Stephen Downes clued me into this a few years back when he spoke of the ‘post linguistic and sub symbolic’ nature of mashing up bits of people’s audio with images, text and video. That’s what inspired me to muck with his podcast (and prof lessig’s) to produce THIS video mashup. It’s the reason why I stayed up way too late one monday night to muck with danah’s first talk in Australia.
So thank you Mr. Biff - I’m flattered. The episode you listened to and sliced up was the most extremely rambly and long ‘thinking out loud’ session Dave and I have ever done. In fact, we both discussed cutting it down to less than one hour - glad we didn’t. Looking forward to meeting you on a future episode of extraordinary.thepodcastnetwork.com.
