openDSM - lets talk about this google project

Earlier today I saw a twitter ‘tweet’ by Jerry from education.au suggesting he was trying to figure out how to let the world know about openDSM.  My suggestion is to start by talking about it, which is the purpose of this post!

First things first, a quick google to find out what on earth Jerry is talking about teaches me two things:

  1. openDSM is a tool developed by education.au Ltd Australia
to provide a lightweight fast search across multiple distributed
education repositories (digital libraries, cultural image libraries,
    metadata repositories, learning object repositories).
  2. code.google.com/p/distributed-search-manager/ - suggests that google host some interesting projects like openDSM (I had no idea).

So, if you know anything more specific about openDSM, or know someone who is using it please join this conversation.

I’d be interested in this. I have developed a database for Natural Resource Management Boards in South Australia of research publications relevant to their region. The database links each publication to a particular region and even a local area within the region, with links from there to Google Earth. It would be great if this could be part of a broader network of libraries/databases. That way, someone interested in wetlands management in their region could look for relevant publications for their region first, then search for what had been published in other databases nationally/globally

    Hi Paul,
If you’re interested I’d be happy to provide more information with you. As Nick said, we have an implementation of openDSM searching across a number of NRM and related repositories and we have also implemented a GoogleMaps mashup with search as geographical context in search is becoming more important to users of our services. It’s great to see that you are local so if you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us.

    Cheers,
    Jerry.
