I just can’t help feeling that I have been sucked in by Will Anderson and his band of cock-sure mass media manipulators. To me, an obvious extension of the very clever Gruen Transfer format would be to make an ad that gets ‘banned’, stick it on the web and enjoy the frenzy o naive little social media geeks clicking on the link during the show and tweeting every reaction from ‘gee the server timed out’ to ‘nominating ABC Legal as cnut of the week’. ‘Gruen ad ban sparks online debate’ suggests google – no shit sherlock!
Perhaps Im still smarting from a recent breakfast with Stilgherrian at which my gullability in regard to the Lessig/Colbert orchestrated ‘angst’ was discovered. So far, every piece of commentary I have been able to find fails to ask the question ‘Was the Gruen segment designed from the outset to result in a banned ad that would spark online debate?’. If so Will and his cock-sure mates have successfully ‘delivered an axe into the head’ of a bunch of social media geeks who should know better. (Go and re-read Cluetrain page 80 ‘the axe in our heads – Doc Searls).
Even if Adam from the ad agency did have a genuine epiphany (and Will was not his drinking partner at the time), it still ticks me off that it is so easy to spark an onine debate that does not even question the intent.
Please discuss!
Love and kisses- teh Fang.
