My band ‘Geezers‘ are doing a fund-raiser at the Gov in Adelaide, South Australia on the last Sunday in May. There are three great reasons why you might want to come along:

  1. You want to see my band play (with special junior guests) at an accessible date/time/place
  2. You care about kids with cancer and would like to support em via McDermott McGuinness foundation
  3. You want to get your hands on some very special wine (see below)

I would normally put this type of self promotion on my other blog (but I think nobody reads it anymore in the age of tweets n such) but this is a special occasion. So much so that you can read about it in this month’s SA Life magazine.

Tickets to the gig are $15 each ($10 concession/student, children under 14 free) and are NOW AVAILABLE from The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel phone 8340 0744 – or visit www.thegov.com.au

In the words of Dave our drummer:

Music fans, wine lovers and friends

It’s commitment time – to support a major childhood cancer fundraising gig I’m organising – on SUNDAY, MAY 31, from 5pm to 9pm at THE GOVERNOR HINDMARSH HOTEL venue room, 59 Port Rd, Hindmarsh.

In June I’m travelling to China as part of a major fundraiser, walking along long chunks of the Great Wall of China in June to raise money for the Childhood Cancer ward at the Women & Children’s Hospital, via the McGuinness McDermott Foundation which is hosting the walk. Essentially, I’m writing stories about the preparation and then the journey for SA Life magazine to help bolster interest; and I want to raise as much for the cause as I can – hence it’s time to put me and all my mates to work for a fundraising gig. The wonderful Tonkin family has given me the Gov venue room on Sunday May 31, 5pm-9pm so that all the bands I play in, my sons play in and our mates can play a set each. In addition, more than 20 wineries have donated vast amounts of Old Bottles, Big Bottles and Rare Bottles for a bumper silent wine auction, so bring your wallet (and your serious wine loving friends) ‘cause you may be able to snaffle some amazing wines.

Tickets to the gig are $15 each ($10 concession/student, children under 14 free) and are NOW AVAILABLE from The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel phone 8340 0744 – or visit www.thegov.com.au

The music will be provided by:
Geezers – Proudly celebrating old school rock’n’roll, with Steve Hitchcock, Mike Seyfang, Rob Strong and Dave Sly making a glorious noise, from sweet acoustic sing and strumalongs by the likes of The Beatles and Pete Murray, through the irresistible pop melodies of Mental as Anything, The Monkees and Dragon, to blazing rock’n’roll from the Stones, Daddy Cool, Van Morrison, Deep Purple and too many more to mention. A hit at wineries and major celebration gigs, where people insist on dancing.

No Strings Attached – ol’ bluesy rock’n’roll featuring Andy McGloin, Steve “Fearless” Fleming, Mick Finch and Dave Sly, with an age of experience between them and fuelled by the passion to play with sweat and purpose. Imagine pouring a bottle of Jack Daniels into the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album for an acoustic rock’n’roll show, with upright bass, brushes on drums and a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, but still pumping with raucous energy.

Yass – cool funky jazz, phat with the funk, from a hot young quartet of players who have graduated through the Immanuel College Stage Bands to now be part of music courses at the Adelaide University Conservatorium. Miles Sly on drums, Jamie Seyfang on guitar, Ryan Mifsud on bass, Terry Crowley on keyboard and Henry Moncrief on tenor sax, adding a sharp modern edge to jazz and funk classics.

Lefties – The Sly family house band, with Dave, Miles and Lucas swapping guitars, bass, drums and vocal duties for an eclectic spread of tuneful acoustic and melodic rock songs. A pleasure for dad and his sons to be playing in the same band, spanning generations of good music that is greatly enjoyed by audiences.

The Crew – Outstanding fresh rock music, featuring the original songs of Lucas Sly, performed with his very talented young musical buddies Jack Williams, Jack Troisi and Nick Travers.

Adelaide Ukulele Appreciation Society – Music to sing along with at the top of your lungs as the ensemble of 30+ ukulele players hammer out golden tunes from Johnny Cash, Nancy Sinatra, The Waterboys and lots of more that you would expect to hear on a uke. Strum, sing and smile.

Fathers and Sons Superband – A Musical Battle Royale that features more musical talent than you can poke an electric cattle prod at, as the massed males of the Sly, Seyfang and Strong families take the stage as the fabulous Fathers & Sons Rock’n’Roll Superband that deconstructs and rebuilds the songs of Radiohead, Elvis Costello, Lenny Kravitz, Auge March, Black Sabbath and countless others – before your very ears.

Wines for the silent auction – Big Bottles, Old Bottles and Rare Bottles – have been generously provided by:
• Elderton Wines – The star item of the auction is an Imperial (6 litres, or 8 standard bottles) of Elderton 2001 Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon from the winery’s museum stock. Only of these 10 Imperials were produced.

• Brown Brothers – The 5th edition of Patricia series wines: 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 Shiraz, 2004 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay/Pinot Meunier brut and 2006 Noble Riesling.
• The Lane Vineyard – Six-bottle cases of 2006 Off The Leash Shiraz Viognier and 2007 Off The Leash No Oak White (chardonnay with viognier, pinot gris and semillon).
• With more wines pledged from Kaesler Wines in the Barossa, Sorby Adams Wines of the Barossa, Koonara of Coonawarra and many more…
AND • Burge Family Winemakers – Rick Burge is donating five dozen of his superb Barossa wines to be purchased for drinking at the gig, or buy a take-home pack.

PLEASE: Forward this email to your music and wine loving friends, to encourage them to come on the night – and print off the posters attached to ensure maximum exposure for this wonderful celebration of good music, good wine and good people.

With thanks – and I look forward to seeing you there
David

p.s. Did I mention this one got coverage in the posh ‘SALife’ Mag?
