Notes, links and tips for attendees of last night’s “Blogging 101 and beyond” workshop run by the Australian Science Communicators, South Australia branch (ASCSA).
- slideshare.net version of my introductory powerpoint slides
- blogpost & slidecast (with audio) of the ‘supercharge your science‘ talks I gave in Cairns / Townsville. Excellent background & motivation.
- basic resources on getting started with wordpress.com and using the visual editor to craft great looking blog posts with pictures, hyperlinks and formatting.
Thanks to James (of “Disease of the Week” fame) for compiling this list of our brand new sciency, communicatorary blogs!

p.s. I am writing this post from the Environment Institute at the University of Adelaide. If you write about environmental science, why not put something on your new blog and see if you can get it featured on by the Environment Institute.

A big thanks from Team Placenta for the tips on how to get our blog up and running, and providing this extra info. Hope to see you checking out our blog sometime
Hi Mike,
Can I ask a question please?
When I was quickly setting up the blog on monday I left the address of the blog as my username (ie senojh.wordpress.com), but ultimately i don’t want to call the blog senojh. Does it matter if the blog is called something different to the web address, aside from a little confusion? I looked up how to do it (http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/), but was wondering if it matters or not.
Thanks
Hilary
SmipeLeisure!
Just to help me connect the dots and figure out who is who – which blog did you create on Monday?
Hey Hilary, sorry we didnt get a chance to chat on Monday – my brain got overloaded!!!
Tis virtually impossible to get a decent name in the .wordpress.com namespace (unless you are as crafty as ‘theothersideofscience’ folk!). Even simpler you can buy any .com domain name you like and redirect your blog there (super easy and cheap as wordpress.com paid upgrade)
Mike
